Meeting to Brief on the Outcomes of COP 15 to UNCBD – 25/7/23

Principal Secretary(PS) for Wildlife, Ms. Silvia Museiya earlier today  joined Principal Secretaries(PSs); Eng. Festus Ng’eno (Environment & Climate Change), Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, EBS (Forestry) for a high-level breakfast meeting with Director Generals & CEOs of State corporations and technical officers drawn from different Ministries, Private Sector and development partners for a briefing on the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) outcomes and implementation plan.

The meeting themed “Whole Government and Whole of Society Approach” expects parties to integrate the Global Biodiversity Framework’s targets into sectoral & cross-sectoral policies, plans, & programs. Further collaborate with public & private entities, civil society organizations, & development partners to develop an implementation framework and aims in the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) so as not to leave anyone behind.

Ms. Museiya insisted on the contribution and rights of indigenous people and local communities, acknowledging the important roles they play as custodians of biodiversity and as critical partners in its conservation, restoration, and sustainable use.

Executive order No. 1 of 2023 confers the State Department for Wildlife functions on Biological Diversity as follows;

  • Wildlife Biodiversity management & protection
  • Sustainable wildlife Biodiversity economy
  • Wildlife Biodiversity International obligations & Multilateral Agreements
