Kenya had its National Consultation meeting on establishing Transfrontier conservation areas in the IGAD region.
This meeting hosted by State Department for Wildlife brought on board various stakeholders from Nature Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Conservation Association, Kenya Wildlife Service, and Wildlife Research and Training Institute. CMS CoP resolution 14.16 parties agreed to establish TFCAs to promote wildlife conservation. This consultative process has been supported by EU funds through the Conservation fund and the legal Atlas. The consultations were done through group discussions and recommendations will be submitted to IGAD secretariat and member states for further considerations. Key areas were on Benefits of TFCAs, potential areas IGAD region, legal and Policy aspects options for effective management of illegal wildlife trade, possibility of integrating the law enforcement initiatives with existing platforms such as Lusaka. Possibility of exploring cooperation and synergies with other MEAS such as CBD on Global biodiversity framework focusing on target 3 on 30 by 30 target 4 5,7, 13, 19 and 21.
Mr Mukonyi represented the state Department by giving the opening remarks on behalf of the Principal Secretary who was in another engagement.
